Last week, the United States received a “proof of life” video showing a frail and weak Bowe Bergdahl. He is the only U.S. service member that is being held captive in Afghanistan. Bowe has been MIA since he disappeared from his base in 2009 and has since been the confirmed hostage of Taliban forces.
Taliban commander Maulvi Sangeen kidnapped Bowe Bergdahl from Paktika province in southern Afghanistan in June 2009. Since his kidnapping, he has been held in the mountains by the Haqqani network. They have been taking care of him and feeding him in hopes that he could be used as leverage for the release of several of their commanders that are currently still being held at Guantanamo Bay.
Two years ago, when the Taliban opened their office in Qatar, it looked like the United States and the Taliban would be able to negotiate the release of Bergdahl. There was even optimism about peace talks occurring. Yet these talks never materialized, and Bergdahl was never released. Sources believe that he is back with the Haqqani Network somewhere in the mountains between Pakistan and Afghanistan.
Bowe’s family still holds onto the hope that their son will be released to them unharmed; yet with each passing year, those hopes diminish. It has been almost 5 years since he was kidnapped and the Taliban has made it clear that they will only exchange him for 5 of their top commanders being held hostage by the U.S. This week, his family had a very simple message for their son: “BOWE – If you see this, continue to remain strong through patience. Your endurance will carry you through the finish line. Breathe!”
The Pentagon has said that they will continue to employ military, intelligence, and diplomatic tools to ensure his safe return and that they have not given up the hope of finding him and freeing him.
