According to a recent article in The News-Messenger, Ohio fatal motorcycle accidents have increased in this past year. The article indicates that there have been 106 fatal Ohio fatal motorcycle accidents as of July 25, as compared to only 99 at this time last year. This is a 7% increase in Ohio motorcycle fatalities from 2009.
Just a few of the tragic Ohio motorcycle accidents that occurred during this period:
· A Medina man died on State Route 82 when his motorcycle crashed into the back of a stopped car. The victim was not wearing a helmet. The man’s 12-year old daughter, who was wearing a helmet, was also injured in the motorcycle accident.
· On SR 105 in the Village of Pemberville, a 37-year old Ohio motorcyclist was killed when a car hit him head-on. In this car and motorcycle accident the motorcyclist’s passenger also suffered serious injuries in the motorcycle accident. Neither of them was wearing helmets.
A media release issued by the Ohio Traffic Safety Office (OTSO) on July 26, 2010 includes a reminder that Ohio drivers can help to reduce Ohio motorcycle fatalities. The fatality numbers reported by the OTSO are slightly lower than figures reported in The News-Messenger article, but the statistics still reflect a 7% increase in Ohio motorcycle accidents this year compared to this time in 2009.
The Ohio Traffic Safety Office stresses that education and alert driving are key to saving the lives of Ohio motorcyclists. The OTSO also includes a reminder that all Ohio motorists should do their part to reduce motorcycle accidents in Ohio by looking out for motorcyclists and sharing the road. Last spring, the OTSO launched a “Ride SMART” motorcycle safety campaign. The focus of this campaign is:
· S – Ride Sober
· M – Ride Motorcycle endorsed
· A – Ride Alert
· R – Use the Right Gear
· T – Ride Trained
These are important safety reminders for Ohio motorcyclists and motorcyclists all over the U.S.
