Russ Brown Motorcycle Attorneys®: Without a doubt, the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally is the biggest and baddest motorcycle event ever held, with more than 500,000 people attending last years rally you can bet your last dollar that the 2012 Sturgis rally will be even bigger and better than last year; if you are planning on going this year you better start making those plans now unless you are good with paying 3 to 4 times more for 2 star motels and camping spots.
As an internet dependent road warrior, I regularly access my email, Twitter and Facebook feeds to stay in contact with my blogs followers, so I need lodging that offers high speed internet access, as well as the basic comforts of air conditioning, a clean soft bed, and a quite atmosphere to write blog posts and stories.
While most of the motorcycle enthusiasts planning to attend the 2012 Sturgis rally will have other needs that are important to them, the basics are comfortable lodging, a safe place to park their motorcycles and a clean hot shower. With so many options from economical camping spots, RV parking with hookups, or a variety of hotel and motel lodging, no matter what you need you can find it at the 2012 Sturgis rally, but you had better start booking those camping spots or hotel rooms fast or you could be stuck with sleeping in a bush, or on a rest stop picnic table!
In 2010 I was hired last minute to cover the 2010 Sturgis event and festive activities at the Sturgis Buffalo Chip Campground, while my customer had a travel savvy booking agent that was able to get me a comfortable room in Rapid City, many other reporters and media photographers were stuck shelling out over $300 a night for mediocre motel lodging that at best was only a room with a bed and shower.
Most motorcyclists will want to spend every minute they can enjoying all that Sturgis has to offer, but when it is time to crash after partying all night, nothing but comfort matters. While I was having fun at the Sturgis Buffalo Chip I wished I had one of the cool Rental RV’s they offer so I could just walk out of the main amphitheater to my bed. They also have wifi available to those who can’t disconnect during the rally in the amphitheater. It was very cool to see people get their morning coffee, grab a picnic table and open up their laptops in the vendor area of the Chip. I like being close to the action so the Buffalo Chip is perfect for me.
No matter what you plan to do, making your plans now will help you save money and the hassle of coming up with a back up plan for lodging etc. I was talking with a few bikers from Casper, Wyoming while making my way Sturgis in 2011 and they had rented a 4-bedroom house in Rapid City that had a big front yard to park motorcycles, a spacious kitchen and they even had internet access so they could post pictures on Facebook and Twitter… I was thinking they must be rich to afford that but I was surprised to learn that booking in April the scored the place for $3500 for 7 days, which is a super deal for a medium sized group for a whole week.
The 2012 Sturgis motorcycle rally is guaranteed to be a blast so make those plans early…. and if you run into me, the beer is on me!
The Sturgis Motorcycle Rally website has a lot of info in regards to hotel / motel lodging and private housing rentals. A great website to use as a resource for all rally info.
See you in Sturgis!
