Much of the country has been feeling the unforgiving hand of winter in the last few weeks—even Florida has been wet and cold. It’s this time of year when bikers begin to get that yearning for sunshine and open roads, wishing for the swift return of warmer climes. Well, there just might be something out there that will satisfy that craving for some two wheeled fun; and yes, in the middle of the winter months. The World Championship ICE Racing Series has come in to save us from the winter motorcycling doldrums.
The ICE Racing Series consists of a group of riders who have added steel studs to the wheels of some specially designed motorcycles and some ATVs. Converging on arenas and convention centers across the nation, they then delight the crowds with the fast paced action and great motorcycle racing—on ice!
The series is split into two divisions providing plenty of action to take in. The first series, dubbed the Manufacturers World Cup, is made up of motorcycles only. The lightweight aluminum bikes capable of accelerating from 0-60 mph in only 3 seconds provide incredible manoeuvrability allowing the skill of the riders to determine the outcome of the races.
The second series, Ice Unlimited Quads features riders on ATVs. The only two standard rules for this series are that the machines must be rear wheel drive and must also contain a kill switch. The latter being a safety mechanism designed to engage should the rider be thrown from their machine. Other than that, it is no holds barred for the Ice Unlimited Quads.
There are five dates on the schedule for the upcoming season with one still to be determined. Interested parties can choose from the following venues for the event most convenient for them:
· January 3rd and 4th – Maverik Center – West Valley City, Utah
· January 11th – Pensacola Bay Center – Pensacola, Florida
· January 25th – US Cellular Coliseum – Bloomington, Illinois
· Feb 1st – Wings Stadium – Kalamazoo, Michigan
· Feb 21st – The Ford Center – Evansville, Indiana
· The location yet to be determined is scheduled for March 22nd
So if the winter weather has got you down, go and check them out! Tickets are cheap, averaging $10 a head, and the action intense. Besides, who isn’t up for some old school motorcycle racing fun?
