What appeared to be a juvenile prank created an unexpected road hazard for an Atascadero motorcyclist.
According to KCOY in Santa Maria, a 26-year old California motorcyclist riding on Capistrano Drive ran into packing tape stretched about waist-high across the road between a tree and a fence. Unfortunately, the biker did not see the tape until it was too late to stop. Based upon the KCOY article and a KSBY in Santa Barbara report, the motorcycle accident victim sustained broken bones, cuts, and road rash when he fell off his bike. He was reportedly driving under 30-mph at the time. Based upon witness reports, two teenagers were believed to be responsible for the accident.
Fortunately, California motorcyclists are unlikely to face this type of road hazard, but there are many other potential hazards facing motorcyclists every day. Conditions such as uneven pavement, loose gravel, or wet surfaces present more danger to motorcyclist than to other drivers. When encountering dangerous road conditions, two-wheeled vehicles are more likely to be thrown off balance or to lose control than a car or truck.
It is important for motorcyclists to be aware of the potential road hazards and be vigilant to avoid them when riding. Some other hazards California motorcyclists encounter on the roadways include:
· Potholes
· Rough resurfaced roads
· Debris, tire tread pieces, or other objects on the road
· Uneven road lanes
· Animals on the road
· Slick or wet roads
